CASE STUDY: WICKES
PROJECT INFORMATION
Travis Perkins plc (Travis Perkins) had legacy supplier systems, where suppliers could view stock levels and understand the volume of products being sold across stores. Suppliers were provided with raw data and the ability to exact some performance measurements around availability, on-time and in full. This was a paid for service, which generated a profit-making revenue and facilitated reasonable supplier engagement.
In 2016, the system was ready for improvement, particularly on the merchant side. After consideration, Coeus SEP was chosen because of its analytics and dashboarding capabilities. More specifically, Coeus was chosen because it allows you to provision dashboard views and a variety of different objects onto a webpage for external consumption
During this period, Travis Perkins was making strategic business decisions, to include splitting out its retail side. This entailed both commercial and technical separation from Wickes and meant that Wickes now needed to create their own version of i-supply, within their environment. They asked Catalyst BI to support them with this project.
Wickes’ suppliers are diverse and at different levels of maturity. There are around 200+ suppliers and 600 colleagues, all of whom work slightly differently. Wickes Stores also have different levels of maturity, different cultures and different structures. As a retailer, suppliers tend to work Monday – Friday 9am-5pm, so having data at certain pinch points is crucial.
THE RELATIONSHIP
In 2019, the structural changes at Travis Perkins provided Catalyst with the opportunity with Wickes to totally re-design and re-engineer the existing solution using their product - Coeus SEP. Taking the concept and premise of the i-supply solution, Catalyst achieved go-live status for Wickes within a two-month period. The new system was also much faster and easier to navigate than the previous solution.
CHALLENGES SOLVED
- Invoice matching – dashboard explains why invoices might be on hold and provides a full history
- Assists with Cost Centre Code alignment
- Reconciles Consignment stock data
- Allows suppliers to monitor their monthly performance
- Helps them to understand how much Wickes has bought, how much has been sold and how much is left
-
Helps their operations become much slicker and far more dynamic
- Aids suppliers with building inventory, as it helps planning around how much they need to make, how many pallets are required
and even how many delivery drivers - Fencing suppliers use i-supply to work
out the demand at store level of their top four products. They can be discerning in where they send panels to, avoiding those who already have stock or who, historically, for whatever reason have not experienced a high level of sales.
THE IMPROVEMENTS
(Market leader saw 50%)
tracked and measured.
Coeus has allowed us to first gain insight into the unique situation surrounding the global pandemic, but also support and help our supply chain colleagues with stock, sales and forecast demand beyond.
- We can see adapting shopper habits
- SKUs experiencing increased demand
This enables and empowers us to support our own supply chain through more accurate forecasting and by identifying priority lists and products the factories can focus production on, whilst minimizing lost sales.
Wickes vision is to share SKU-level data on sales, stock and accounts with suppliers daily to create a collaborative culture with relationships built on trust and partnering for success.
This gives us a triple win. A win for Wickes, a win for our suppliers, and most importantly, a win for our customers by helping us streamline our stock giving us a new level of dynamism.
Coeus helped us pivot during Covid-19, to streamline our stock, allowing us to achieve a 50% target of online click-and-collect, fueled by our supply chain transparency.
We can now forecast our stock much more effectively, and when we see issues, we can act on this insight rapidly. Before Coeus SEP, we were taking a weekly report of stock, and could only execute actions on this reactively.
During lockdown SCA was able to maintain supply to the Wickes stores despite I.T challenges in week 14 which meant the normal weekly sales update from the category team was disrupted, this lasted around 4 weeks in total.
During this time SCA was able to use sales and stock data from Coeus SEP, married to our internal forecasts, in order to keep our production lines running and our distribution site at Stoke fully operational in order to maintain stock availability of Pareto A/B lines to the Wickes estate.
Without Coeus SEP this would have been very much harder.

In this blog, we discuss the six critical elements of a successful supply chain, including:
- Innovation and Value Creation
- Digital Technology
- Supplier Portals – It is a Minefield
- Supplier Partnership
- Unlock the Value in Data
- Compliance and Risk Management
